Police bust gang involved in stealing cash, jewelries

KATHMANDU: Nepal Police have arrested a gang responsible for stealing jewelry and cash at night.

According to the District Police Range, Kathmandu, the gang had been conducting robberies using motorcycles over the past three months.

A joint police team from the District Police Range, along with police circles in Swayambhu, Gaushala, and Bouddha, arrested the suspects from various locations across Kathmandu.

On Wednesday night, police opened fire in Mulpani, Kathmandu, and captured the main planner along with other gang members. Those arrested include Binay Tamang, Ayan Majhi, Manish Rasaili, Sabin Majhi, Pema Tamang, Salon Tamang, Rajiv Bhandari, Bishal Tamang, Bidur Bishwakarma, and Phurbaa Tamang.

Police have identified Binay Tamang as the leader of the gang.

Kathmandu Police Chief SSP Ramesh Thapa said all the arrested individuals have criminal backgrounds. “Most of them worked as taxi drivers during the day while engaging in robberies at night. The gang became more active following the Gen Z protests of September 8 and 9 last year,” he added.

Police also recovered a private car, a taxi, and six motorcycles used in the robberies. So far, 27 victims of jewelry and cash theft have contacted police and filed complaints.

In a separate case, Kathmandu Police also arrested Surendra Gautam, a fugitive wanted for abduction, unlawful confinement, and attempted murder in connection with the 33-kilogram gold case involving Sanam Shakya.
