Meche, Portel elected to National Assembly from Koshi

ITAHARI: Roshani Meche and Somnath Portel have been elected to the National Assembly from Koshi Province.

In the voting held on Sunday, Meche defeated Namita Neupane from the Nepali Communist Party (NCP) in the women’s cluster.

Similarly, Portel defeated Khem Sundas, also from the NCP, in the Dalit cluster.

Earlier, Sunil Thapa from Nepali Congress (NC) was elected unopposed from the Khas/Arya cluster.

Province assembly members, and chiefs and deputy chiefs of local units are eligible to vote in the National Assembly election. A total of 93 provincial assembly members and 274 local representatives were eligible to vote in the election. However, five provincial assembly members and nine local representatives did not participate in the voting.

NC and UML had contested the elections by forming an alliance.
