KATHMANDU: Nepali Congress General Secretary Gagan Kumar Thapa, who was expelled from the party for five years on Wednesday, said that the leadership endorsed by the special general convention will be the official leadership of the Nepali Congress.

Addressing the closed-door session of the 2nd Special General Convention currently underway at Bhrikuti Mandap, Kathmandu, Thapa said the convention has proceeded to the leadership selection process. He also said that information about the leadership elected through the special general convention would be submitted to the Election Commission on Wednesday itself.

Thapa claimed that he had made every possible effort to reach a consensus within the party. “I tried until the very last moment to achieve consensus,” he said. “Even this morning, party President Sher Bahadur Deuba told me that a regular general convention would be held in May and that I should become party president then,” Thapa said. “But I failed to make him understand this situation.”

Claiming that they are still within the party’s legitimate structure, Thapa said that both he and Bishwa Prakash Sharma remain the legitimate general secretaries of the party. “This way, we are still within the party’s parliamentary board,” he added.

Thapa said the current dispute within the party is not about whether they remain personally safe or not. “We are not bothered by all this,” he said. “We are trying to take a risk.”
