LALITPUR: Nearly 30% of inmates, who escaped from Nakkhu Prison in Lalitpur during the Gen Z protests of September 8 and 9, have not returned.

A total of 1,280 inmates serving sentences had escaped on September 9.

According to the prison administration, 70% of the escaped inmates have returned to prison so far, either voluntarily or with the coordination of security agencies.

Nakkhu Prison Chief Dirgharaj Upadhyay said the search for the absconding inmates is ongoing. “The search is not limited to Nepal but is also being carried out abroad. We are working to return all absconding inmates to prison as per the existing laws,” he added.

The Department of Prisons had earlier announced that inmates who failed to return to prison by October 6 would face action as per the Prison Act, 2022, and other applicable laws.

The prison administration has called on family members of inmates, security agencies, local governments, the media, concerned government offices, and all relevant stakeholders to assist in the search for the escaped inmates.
