RSP-Balen agreement: Lamichhane to lead party, Balen PM face

KATHMANDU: The Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) and Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC) Mayor Balen Shah have reached an agreement on a “broad unity.”

According to the agreement reached early Sunday morning, Lamichhane will continue as the Central Chairperson of the RSP, while Balen Shah will be put forward as the leader of the parliamentary party and the prospective candidate for prime minister following the House of Representatives elections scheduled for March 5.

RSP leaders and Balen Shah had been engaged in dialogue and efforts toward cooperation and unity for a long time. It gained pace after Lamichhane was released on bail from Nakkhu prison on December 19.

Lamichhane and Balen had been in continuous meetings and discussions since last week. After repeated formal and informal meetings and in-depth deliberations on a shared political vision, leadership structure, and future course of action, the agreement was ultimately reached.

The agreement bears the names of the two leaders only, without any designation or affiliations.

In the agreement, the two sides have expressed a shared commitment to addressing the aspirations of the general public by ensuring good governance within a pluralistic democratic system based on a liberal economy with social justice. It also states an understanding to institutionally carry forward the voices raised by youth-led movements against corruption and misgovernance, including the Gen Z movement of September 8 and 9, as well as other popular movements from different periods.
