UML files petition demanding House reinstatement

KATHMANDU: The CPN-UML has filed a writ petition at the Supreme Court demanding the reinstatement of the House of Representatives.

UML leaders Mahesh Bartaula and Sunita Baral jointly filed the petition on Tuesday on behalf of the party’s parliamentary party in the dissolved House. Bartaula and Baral served as the party’s Chief Whip and Whip in the dissolved House of Representatives.

In the petition, the two have sought the apex court order to annul the appointment of Sushila Karki as Prime Minister and the dissolution of the House. Likewise, they have demanded the scrapping of all decisions and appointments made after the House dissolution.

Chief Whip Bartaula said that the petition urges the top court to declare Karki’s appointment unconstitutional prima facie. He argued that Karki is not a member of the House and lacks the support of any party. The petition claims that Karki’s appointment violates Articles 76 and 132 (2) of the Constitution of Nepal, 2015.

The petitioners have sought a writ of certiorari to revoke the President’s decision to appoint Karki as the Prime Minister and the oath of office.
