JANAKPURDHAM: CPN-UML Secretary Raghubir Mahaseth has been reelected to the House of Representatives from the Dhanusha-4 constituency.
In a tightly contested race, Mahaseth defeated Mahendra Yadav of Nepali Congress by 124 votes. While Mahaseth received 32,236 votes, Yadav got 32,112 votes.
Yadav is the joint general secretary of Nepali Congress.
With this, UML has won nine seats of the House of Representatives in Madhesh Province.
The duo had contested in the 2017 election as well. Mahaseth trumped Yadav by around 3,000 votes that time.
The 2017 election was Mahaseth’s first victory in parliamentary elections. He had faced defeats in 1999, 2008 and 2013 elections.
Mahaseth, who is also the Madhesh Province in-charge of UML, briefly served as the Deputy Prime Minister of KP Sharma-led government in 2021. His wife Julie Kumari Mahato has also been elected to the parliament from Dhashusha-3.
