KATHMANDU: Seven climbers, including five foreigners, have died after an avalanche struck an expedition team to Yalung Ri mountain in Gaurishankar Rural Municipality-9 of Dolakha district on Monday morning, according to the Armed Police Force (APF).
A 12-member team comprising foreign and Nepali climbers had set out to scale the peak on October 27.
A joint rescue team of 50 personnel from the Armed Police Force Border Outpost (BOP) Lamabagar, the Nepal Army, and Nepal Police was deployed to the site on Monday evening.
Rescuers said efforts are ongoing to retrieve the bodies and airlift the injured to safety. Adverse weather conditions and challenging terrain have hindered rescue operations.
The identities and nationalities of the deceased are being verified, according to APF Spokesperson DSP Shailendra Thapa.
The expedition was organized by Kathmandu-based company Dreamers Destination.
