KATHMANDU: A faction within the Nepali Congress (NC) that has been running a signature campaign across the country demanding a special general convention has urged leader Dr Shekhar Koirala to take the lead in creating an environment for the convention.
On Monday morning, members of the faction visited Koirala’s contact office in Bishalnagar and requested him to take the initiative, stating that a special general convention had become necessary for the party.
According to Manoj Mani Acharya, a member of the faction, the group also expressed dissatisfaction over the party leadership’s failure to table the proposal—backed by signatures from 54% of general convention representatives—at the Central Working Committee meeting.
“We told Dr Koirala that even the representatives who had voted for you have signed the demand. So why was it not allowed to be discussed in the meeting? You must now take the lead in creating the environment for a special general convention,” Acharya said.
He added that Dr Koirala by saying he was making efforts to either hold a regular general convention by mid-December or, if necessary, a special convention.
Gururaj Ghimire, who is close to Dr Koirala, said the faction plans to meet NC Acting President Purna Bahadur Khadka along with Dr. Koirala.
