Honorary consuls barred from using diplomatic number plates

KATHMANDU: The government has decided to revoke the use of blue diplomatic number plates on vehicles used by honorary consuls and consuls general appointed by foreign countries for Nepal.

According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the decision was taken on Friday in line with provisions under international law, the principle of reciprocity, Honorary Consuls Regulation, 1982.

The move follows growing complaints about the misuse of vehicles bearing blue diplomatic plates, according to ministry officials. Many Nepali business figures currently serve as honorary consuls and consuls general representing various countries.

Out of 67 honorary consulates operating in Nepal, 50 have been using vehicles with blue diplomatic number plates.

The ministry has said it will facilitate the conversion of such vehicles to red number plates, which are used by private individuals.

Honorary consuls, however, will continue to enjoy privileges related to the display of national flags during national day celebrations, official visits by heads of state, government leaders, or foreign ministers, and during welcome and farewell ceremonies for ambassadors of their respective countries.
