Nepal eye T20 World Cup berth as they face Kuwait in qualifiers

KATHMANDU: Nepal are taking on Kuwait at Al Amerat, Oman, on Wednesday in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup Asia and East Asia Pacific Qualifier, aiming to secure back-to-back appearances at the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup.

The ICC Men’s T20 World Cup Asia and East Asia Pacific Qualifier features nine teams divided into three groups of three. The top two teams from each group will advance to the Super Six stage, where they will face each of the other qualified teams once, excluding the team from their own group. The top three teams after the Super Six stage will qualify for the World Cup to be hosted jointly by India and Sri Lanka next year.

Nepal are in Group ‘B’ along with Kuwait and Japan. Similarly, Group ‘A’ features Malaysia, Qatar and UAE, while Oman, Papua New Guinea and Samoa are in Group ‘C’.

The Rhinos will play their second group stage match against Japan on Friday.

Nepal first appeared on the T20 World Cup stage in 2014 and made a memorable return exactly a decade later. In the 2024 ICC T20 World Cup, Nepal earned global praise for their near-upset victory against South Africa in a thrilling one-run defeat.

The Nepali squad reached Oman brimming with confidence, fresh from its T20I series win against West Indies. Comfortable wins against Oman and Qatar in warm-up matches have further strengthened their credentials.

Nepal Squad:
