Nepse rebounds with 4.44% gain; turnover rises to Rs 9.17 billion

KATHMANDU: The Nepal Stock Exchange (Nepse) index staged a sharp rebound on Sunday, gaining 111.70 points as the market recovered from the previous session’s heavy losses triggered by arson and vandalism on September 8 and 9.

The benchmark index climbed right after trading began on Sunday morning, hitting an intra-day high of 2,634.55 points about two hours into trading. Although the index pared some gains, it eventually closed 4.44% higher at 2,628.65, snapping a six-day losing streak.

With this, the index also returned above the psychological support level of 2,600 points.

Trading had lasted only a few minutes on Thursday, the first trading day after the arson and vandalism of September 8 and 9, when three successive circuit-breakers were enforced.

Market breadth was strongly positive on Sunday, with 224 scrips posting gains and 28 declining. Nine stocks hit the positive circuit of 10%, while 21 others rallied more than 9%.

Nepal Reinsurance Company Ltd led the turnover chart with shares worth Rs 831.35 million traded. Himalayan Reinsurance Ltd and Guardian Microlife Insurance Ltd followed with turnovers of Rs 482.68 million and Rs 304.85 million, respectively.

Overall, securities worth Rs 9.17 billion were traded on the bourse on Sunday. A total of 20.03 million units changed hands during the session through 108,908 transactions.

All trading groups, except Mutual Fund and Non-life Insurance, posted gains on Sunday. The Trading sub-index was up 8.66%, followed by Investment (7.68%) and Development Bank (6.07%). The market heavyweight Banking sub-index also rose 4.52%.
