NHRC says it is closely monitoring recent political developments

KATHMANDU: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has said that it was closely monitoring the latest political developments, including the formation of a new government.

In a statement issued on Monday, the constitutional rights body called on one and all to act with restraint and uphold human rights, democracy and the rule of law while addressing the ongoing crisis triggered by the Gen Z movement.

The NHRC urged authorities to ensure timely post-mortems, dignified funerals, and relief for the families of those killed during the protests. It also emphasized the need to identify and remove obstacles preventing citizens from enjoying their fundamental rights, while curbing black marketeering and artificial shortages of essential goods.

The commission further appealed for the reconstruction of damaged public infrastructure and the smooth operation of daily services disrupted by arson and vandalism during demonstrations.

The NHRC also reminded political leaders, citizens and civil society to express their views respectfully without promoting violence, and to advance their demands through democratic processes.

“The responsibility to normalize the crisis lies with all state bodies, political forces and citizens alike,” it added in the appeal.
