Petrol bombs used in squatters’ protest in Thapathali

KATHMANDU: People, who are demonstrating against the Kathmandu Metropolitan City’s decision to evict squatters from Thapathali, have been found carrying petrol bombs and khukuri knives.

They stopped the police who had reached the squatter settlement with bulldozers to raze the settlements from the maternity hospital end.

Chief of KMC Police Raju Pandey have been injured when the squatters clashed with police. Pandey has sustained head injuries. About 14 people from both sides are said to be injured.

Some 300 personnel of KMC’s City Police, Nepal Police and Armed Police have been deployed in Thapathali area. Bagmati Civilization Integrated Development Committee deployed police personnel to remove squatter settlements from Bagmati river banks. The local squatters are protesting the decision by burning tires and showing domestic weapons.

Earlier, the committee had published a public notice, telling the squatters to leave the place by Nov 20.
