Khanal should step down from the party: Nepal

KATHMANDU: CPN (Unified Socialist) Chairperson Madhav Kumar Nepal has suggested that former Prime Minister and senior leader Jhala Nath Khanal should step down from the party for speaking against party policy.

Speaking to journalists in Biratnagar on Friday, Nepal said since Khanal said it was wrong to split UML, he should step down on moral grounds. Nepal also added that Khanal’s statements held little weight, as he had repeatedly refused to abide by the party’s institutional decisions.

In a recent television interview, Khanal said that he had arrived at the conclusion that splitting CPN-UML to form Unified Socialist was a mistake. He said that the split from UML to form Unified Socialist has not been justified yet.

“I am now realizing that the decision to split UML was a mistake. If a decision cannot be justified, it means it was a mistake,” Khanal said.

Khanal said he could think of returning to UML if it abandons ‘People’s Multiparty Democracy’ as its guiding ideology and adopts a socialist program with the goal of scientific socialism.
