KATHMANDU: Nepali Congress (NC) leader Dr Shekhar Koirala has said he is not involved in any activities aimed at changing the current government.

Speaking to journalists in Biratnagar on Wednesday, Koirala said that his recent meetings with leaders of other parties were to discuss relevant national issues. “There was no discussion about government change,” Koirala, who leads the anti-establishment faction within the NC, said. “We don’t have sufficient numbers to change the parliamentary leader of our party, which is a prerequisite to becoming prime minister.”

Koirala’s comment came amid rumors that he was making efforts to form a government with the support of disgruntled factions of Nepali Congress and CPN-UMl and other opposition parties.

“Although the current government has failed to meet public expectations, the possibility of forming an alternative government does not exist. Therefore, the current ruling coalition will continue until the 2027 election,” he added.

Koirala also insisted that former Presidents and Vice Presidents should not return to active politics. “Since the constitution is silent on this matter, there is a need for a constitutional amendment to address it,” he added.
