KATHMANDU: Students of Pulchowk Campus under the Institute of Engineering (IOE), Tribhuvan University, organized a sit-in outside the Office of the Vice-Chancellor in Kirtipur on Sunday, demanding full academic, financial and administrative autonomy for the institute.
They carried placards with slogans such as ‘We dreamed of becoming engineers, ended up as protesters’, ‘Open the classroom doors, government!’ and ‘The fight now is to save the Institute of Engineering’.
Students and teachers launched the protest after Tribhuvan University curtailed the powers of the IOE, which had previously been governed under the 1998 Decentralization Regulations, through the 2023 budget statement.
Protesting the decision, teachers have completely halted teaching activities since July 9 as part of their protest, which began on July 3.
Both students and teachers have called for an immediate end to what they describe as interference in the autonomy of the Institute of Engineering.
