KATHMANDU: Police have arrested Sub-Inspector (SI) Harjit Nath in connection with the suspicious death of a prisoner in Kailali District Prison.
According to DSP Raj Kumar Singh, spokesperson for the District Police Office, Kailali, SI Nath was taken into custody following a complaint lodged by the victim’s family.
The deceased has been identified as Harish Singh Pali (28) of Bhageshwar Rural Municipality-5, Dadeldhura. He was sentenced to 10 days in jail and fined Rs 200,000 in March for a banking offence. Pali was arrested by the District Police Office, Dadeldhura, on June 12. He was then transported to Kailali and presented before the Kailali District Court on Sunday. He was sent to prison the same day.
Police claim that they rushed Pali to the hospital after finding him unconscious due to fever on Sunday evening, and that he died while undergoing treatment. Family members suspect foul play, alleging that there are bruises on his body.
Family members claim that SI Nath was the one who filed the case against Pali.
