EVs worth Rs 18.61 billion imported in nine months

KATHMANDU: Nepal imported electric vehicles worth Rs 18.61 billion in the first nine months of fiscal year 2024/25.

According to the Department of Customs, a total of 7,958 EVs were imported into the country between mid-July last year and mid-April. More than half of these EVs were in the 51 kW to 100 kW motor range. A total of 4,414 EVs in this category, worth Rs 10.94 billion, were imported during the review period. Similarly, a total of 2,783 units with motor capacity up to 50 kW worth Rs 4.97 billion were imported in the review period.

Likewise, 742 units with battery capacity ranging from 101 kW to 200 kW worth Rs 2.56 billion were imported into the country in the nine-month period.

Data shows 17 units with motor capacity ranging from 201 kW to 300 kW worth Rs 124.97 million and two units with motor capacity above 300 kW worth Rs 8.32 million were imported in the review period.

The government mobilized Rs 11.55 billion in revenue from EV imports in the nine-month period.

More than half of the total EV imports during the review period came from China. Data shows a total of 5,893 units were imported into the country from the northern neighbor. Likewise, 2,023 units came from India. Nepal also imported EVs from Germany, Indonesia, South Korea and the US.
