KATHMANDU: Nepali Congress (NC) Chief Whip in the House of Representatives, Shyam Ghimire, has apologized for his statement advocating the legalization of sex work in Nepal.
Speaking during the urgent time of the House of Representatives meeting on Wednesday, Ghimire expressed regret for the negative impacts caused by his statement. He clarified that his opinion during the special session of the parliament on March 16 was his personal view and not the official stance of the NC or its parliamentary committee.
Ghimire had said that legalizing sex work could boost tourism and contribute to economic development by creating jobs in the country. He argued that such a move could promote economic growth.
The NC Chief Whip’s statement drew criticism from ruling as well as opposition lawmakers in parliament.
