One injured in police firing in Dhanusha over naming dispute

KATHMANDU: Police opened fire in Dhanusha on Monday afternoon as two groups clashed over the naming of an intersection in Bhathihan in Sabaila Municipality-9.

The tension escalated when one group attempted to replace the existing name, ‘Bhairav Chowk’, with ‘Yadav Chowk’. Santosh Yadav from Kumbhakarna in Shahidnagar Municipality-1 was injured in the incident after being struck by a police bullet.

“Police were forced to open fire as the dispute soon escalated into a clash. One round was fired,” SP Bhuvaneshwar Tiwari of the District Police Office, Dhanusha, told Himal Press over the phone. “Some police personnel have also been injured.”

According to SP Tiwari, the injured individual is receiving treatment at Madhesh Provincial Hospital, Janakpur.

“Over 300 police personnel have been deployed to the scene. The situation is under control now,” he added.

Meanwhile, Armed Police Force (APF) has said its personnel fired seven rounds of tear gas shells to take the situation under control. “Eight APF personnel are injured in the incident,” said APF Joint Spokesperson DSP Shailendra Thapa.
