Australian Smith 15th batter to amass 10,000 Test runs

KATHMANDU: Australian cricketer Steven Smith has become the 15th batter in the world to reach the milestone of 10,000 Test runs. He achieved this feat on the first day of the opening Test match against Sri Lanka in Galle on Wednesday.

Smith had narrowly missed the landmark in the second innings of the Sydney Test against India earlier this year, falling just one run short when Yashasvi Jaiswal caught him off Prasidh Krishna’s delivery for four runs.

Smith is now the fourth Australian to join the elite 10,000-run club, following legends Ricky Ponting, Allan Border, and Steve Waugh. He is also the joint second-fastest to reach the milestone, achieving it in 115 Tests, alongside Kumar Sangakkara. West Indian great Brian Lara holds the record for being the fastest, having reached the mark in 111 Tests.

In his Test career, Smith has scored 34 centuries and 42 half-centuries, with his highest score being 239 against England. His batting average stands at an impressive 56.29.
