KATHMANDU: The Ministry of Home Affairs has intensified efforts to seize properties amassed through corruption under the government’s ownership.
As part of this initiative, a proposal has been forwarded to the Council of Ministers to seize land and buildings deemed forfeitable by Supreme Court rulings, according to Suresh Panthi, Director General of the Department for Management of Proceeds Crime.
“We have submitted a proposal to confiscate properties purchased by five former administrators and an Indian national involved in criminal activities,” said Panthi. “We have deployed five teams led by section officers to collect data on court rulings related to such properties.”
According to Panthi, various courts have issued 3,500 rulings on property confiscation. He added that properties worth Rs 2 billion are being prepared for seizure. “In the first phase, we are focusing on seizing assets acquired through illegal means by five former administrators in various locations within the Kathmandu Valley,” he added.
The Ministry of Home Affairs has said that it has intensified efforts to seize properties that have remained under possession of the convicted individuals for a long time despite court rulings for forfeiture.
According to the department, a proposal to seize property in the name of convicted former administrators Amonanda Mishra, Saraswati Dhungana, Murari Bahadur Karki, Keshar Jung Khadka and Ramagya Chaturvedi and their family members is currently in the cabinet. Similarly, the proposal includes a property in Nepal purchased by an Indian national involved in criminal activities.
