KATHMANDU: The Janamat Party has demanded Speaker Devraj Ghimire’s resignation, alleging that he did not take action against Goma Labh Sapkota, a member of the House of Representatives, due to their familial relationship.
“Although the party has already taken disciplinary action and decided to remove Sapkota from her position as the member of the House of Representatives, the Speaker is now protecting her as she is about to join CPN-UML,” Janamat Spokesperson Sharad Singh Yadav said in a statement on Monday. “Just because the member is a relative or from the Speaker’s community, and has expressed commitment to join his party, which is UML, the Speaker is protecting her through unconstitutional means even though the party has already completed the necessary process to remove her.”
The party has also alleged that Speaker Ghimire has discriminated against them in several instances, including language and dress usage and providing special emergency time to members from the Janmat Party and other Madhes-centered parties.
“We will protest in parliament against the extreme racist behavior regarding registering and tabling a public importance resolution against racial discrimination. If the Federal Parliament Secretariat does not rectify its racist and racist-driven decisions, we will be forced to obstruct parliament,” the party added in the statement.
Speaker Ghimire had previously refused to post the notice of disciplinary action taken against lawmaker Sapkota on November 22 made by the party. when Janmat Party filed its complaint. Janmat Party continues to claim that they followed the proper procedure when taking action against Sapkota.
