Oli seeks climate compensation from developed economies

KATHMANDU: Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli has said that Nepal firmly believes countries responsible for carbon emissions should compensate others that do not contribute to such emissions.

Delivering a keynote address at a parliamentary forum on Financing the Future: Aligning Finance with the Promise of the Paris Agreement organized by the Parliamentarians for a Fossil-Fuel Future in New York on Saturday afternoon, Oli sought compensation from developed nations citing Nepal’s zero contribution to carbon emissions and its efforts to mitigate climate change impacts.

He added that carbon emissions by developed countries are causing glaciers to melt in the Himalayas, affecting local communities.

PM Oli also said developed nations should increase their financial investments in climate adaptation for the future in line with the Paris Agreement.

“Our future is bright because we are investing in it,” Oli stated.

Following his address, Prime Minister Oli met with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres at the UN headquarters.

Prime Minister Oli is scheduled to address the UN General Assembly on September 26.
