ITAHARI: Construction of a modern convention hall has begun in Itahari.

The lack of a proper convention venue in Itahari has made it difficult to organize large events in the sub-metropolis. Even the Itahari Sub-Metropolitan City has been forced to hold its Municipal Legislative meetings and other events in rented halls. Despite being a hub for drama in eastern Nepal, the sub-metropolis also does not have a well-managed theater.

Speaking after laying the foundation stone for the convention hall, Mayor Hemkarna Poudel said the dream of Itahari residents to have a convention venue was finally being realized.

The convention center, being built on the land of Kavya Batika in Itahari-5, will have the capacity to accommodate 500 people.

According to Engineer Jeevan Ghimire, the modern convention center will span 17,803 square feet and will have three stories. “The building will feature a three-step slope design, similar to a cinema hall,” Ghimire said, adding that the facility could also be used as a theater.

He mentioned that a sound absorption technology was being incorporated during the construction. “The design will accommodate the installation of lighting and sound systems suitable for theater performances,” he added.

Additionally, two smaller seminar halls will be constructed on the convention center premises, which will also feature proper parking facilities and a garden.

The Itahari Sub-Metropolis Office is hopeful that the convention center will boost economic activity in Itahari by providing one of the largest venues in the entire Koshi Province.

The estimated cost of the project is Rs 209.59 million, and construction is expected to be completed by the first week of July 2026.
