KATHMANDU: Kanti Highway, one of the shortest road connections between Kathmandu and Tarai, has resumed full-fledged operation. The road was closed for repairs from mid-March.
“We have completed earthen works on the narrow stretch in Karkibas in Bagmati Rural Municipality-3 as well as in Kalche area,” Rabindra Maharajn, information officer of the Kanti Highway Project, told RSS news agency. “Earthen works in other narrow sections will be completed in the next fiscal year.”
The construction of Kanti Highway, which was started nearly seven decades ago, still remains incomplete. The 92-kilometer road was initially designed to connect Satdobato on the Ring Road in Lalitpur with Buddha Chowk in Hetauda. However, the right of way of the highway on the Kathmandu side has been changed from Tika Bhairav-Satdobato section to Tika Bhairav-Nakkhu via Chhampi and Bhaisepati citing difficulty in widening roads on the narrow sections in Sunakothi and Chapagaun.
