KATHMANDU: The Cricket Association of Nepal (CAN) has suspended former captain Sandeep Lamichhane, who has been proven guilty of rape, from all cricketing activities.
Issuing a statement on Thursday, CAN said it has suspended Lamichhane from all domestic and international sporting activities.
The Kathmandu District Court on December 29 found Lamichhane guilty of raping an 18-year-old girl in Kathmandu on August 21. The district court sentenced him to eight years in prison and also ordered him to pay Rs 500,000 in fines and compensation.
The minor girl, codenamed ‘Gaushala 26’ by the police, filed a complaint against Lamichhane at the Gaushala Police Circle on September 6, 2022. In her complaint, she claimed that Lamichhane raped her on the night of August 21 at a hotel in Gaushala.
The District Government Attorney’s Office, Kathmandu, filed a chargesheet against Lamichhane at Kathmandu District Court on October 31, 2022. Although the district court sent Lamichhane to jail after a detention hearing on November 4, the Patan High Court on January 12 ordered the release of Lamichhane on bail of Rs 2 million.
