NTA chair Khanal steps down

KATHMANDU: Nepal Telecommunications Authority (NTA) Chairman Purushottam Khanal has submitted his resignation.

Khanal tendered his resignation to the Council of Ministers through the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology on Tuesday morning. He was appointed to the post on July 25, 2019. His five-year term was expiring in July.

He has been accused of financial embezzlement in the procurement of the Mobile Data Management System (MDMS) and Telecommunication Traffic Monitoring and Fraud Control System (TERAMOCS).

NTA sources state that Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal and Communication Minister Rekha Sharma were exerting pressure on Khanal to step down.

Separate studies conducted by the Public Accounts Committee of the House of Representatives and an inquiry committee formed by the ministry have concluded that financial irregularities were perpetrated in the procurement of TERAMOCS.

The House Committee has directed the Commission for the Investigation of Abuse of Authority (CIAA) to study TERAMOCS procurement.
