KATHMANDU: The Election Commission (EC) has proposed to hold the election for vacant 19 seats in the National Assembly on January 25.
Issuing a statement on Thursday, the EC said it has advised the government to hold the elections on January 25.
Twenty seats in the upper house, including one to be recommended by the President, are becoming vacant on March 4. As per the National Assembly Election Act, 2017, the election should be held 35 days before the seats become vacant. This means the election should be held by January 29.
The National Assembly consists of 59 members, with eight members elected from each of the seven provinces, and three appointed by the President. Members are elected by an electoral college comprising the mayor/chairperson and deputy mayor/vice chairperson of municipal bodies across the country.
