KATHMANDU: The government has formed a task force to assess the viability of marijuana farming in Nepal.
A meeting chaired by Minister for Finance Dr. Prakash Sharan Mahat held at the finance ministry on Monday took the decision.
A joint secretary from the Ministry of Home Affairs will lead the task force which will also have representatives from the Finance, Industry, Law, and Foreign Affairs ministries, as well as Nepal Police. A joint secretary from the Ministry of Agriculture will serve as the task force’s member secretary.
The government, through the budget for fiscal year 2023/24, announced its intention to conduct a study on medical marijuana cultivation.
According to finance ministry officials, the task force has been mandated to conduct needful studies and provide recommendations on the potential medicinal uses of marijuana and the feasibility of marijuana-based industries in Nepal.
The task force has been given one month to complete the necessary research and prepare its report.
