KATHMANDU: The Supreme Court has overturned the government’s decision to pardon the prison sentence of Yograj Dhakal, also known as Regal Dhakal.

A division bench of Justices Ishwar Prasad Khatiwada, Sapana Pradhan Malla, and Dr. Kumar Chudal issued an order on Thursday to revoke the cabinet’s decision to grant presidential clemency to Dhakal on the occasion of Constitution Day.

Dhakal, a leader of Nepal Tarun Dal, the youth wing of the Nepali Congress, was convicted of the murder of Chetan Manandhar in 2015. He was sentenced to life imprisonment by the Banke District Court in April 2018.

Chetan’s wife, Bharati, moved the apex court in the first week of October, contesting the government’s decision to pardon Dhakal’s sentence.

The court has also ordered the police to arrest Dhakal and detain him to serve his remaining sentence of 11 years, 11 months and five days.
