KATHMANDU: Over 400 young girls were decorated and worshipped as Goddess Kumari in Basantapur on Wednesday – the second day of the Indrajatra festival.
Indrajatra festival formally begins with the ceremonial installation of a wooden pole known as ‘Indrawhoj’. On the main day of the festival, President Ram Chandra Poudel and other dignitaries observe the chariot procession of different gods and goddesses as well as Kumari – the living goddess. The chariots are taken through the core areas of Kathmandu city.
Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC) has also invited foreign guests this year to observe the festival.
The Indrajatra Festival is believed to have begun during the reign of Jaya Prakash Malla – the last Malla king of Kathmandu.
