KATHMANDU: Nepali Congress (NC) leader Dr. Shekhar Koirala has raised questions about whether the current coalition government, led by CPN (Maoist Center) Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal, truly represents the interests of NC leaders and members.

Speaking at a program organized by the Nepal Civil Servants Union in Kathmandu on Tuesday, Koirala wondered: “We have 90 lawmakers and a few ministers in the cabinet, but I still have doubts about whether this is our government.”

He also said the party wasn’t adequately addressing the concerns of civil servants. “Our President is here with us. He is in regular contact with the Prime Minister. However, since the Prime Minister is all-powerful, our ministers find it difficult to oppose his decisions,” Koirala said, asking, “Can’t the NC assume leadership of the government?”

Koirala argued that if the NC were to lead the government, it could better address the people’s demands and issues. “I see little progress in the country at the moment. Recently, I visited Biratnagar, and the situation there was tense. I observed signs of ethnic tensions in the protests,” he added.

The coalition government, consisting of the Maoist Center, NC, and CPN (Unified Socialist), has forged an understanding to lead the government by turns. Currently, the Maoist Center holds the reins, with either the Nepali Congress or CPN United Socialists set to lead the government next.
