US Senator Hollen concludes Nepal visit

KATHMANDU: US Senator Chris Van Hollen is returning home Sunday after completing his three-day visit to Nepal.

Hollen, who arrived in Kathmandu on Friday, held meetings with government officials, representatives from non-governmental offices, youths, lawmakers, and the business community. During these meetings, Hollen took stock of US-funded health, electricity, transport, and infrastructure projects in Nepal and said he was pleased with the progress.

He also visited historic and cultural heritage sites in Nepal. Following his visit to the Bouddhanath Stupa today, the US senator said his visit was aimed at further strengthening the bilateral ties between Nepal and the United States of America, including at the people-to-people level, as both countries observe the 76th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations. Reminiscing about his previous visit to Nepal in 1980, he noted that Nepal had undergone noticeable changes and achievements over the years. He said he assessed his visit as productive in terms of further consolidating political, economic, and professional relations between Nepal and the US.

“Nepal’s young and vibrant democracy is highly significant,” he said, adding that the US had always partnered with Nepal in strengthening democracy here.

Hollen will now travel to Sri Lanka and the Maldives.
