KATHMANDU: It has been confirmed that Dawa Chiring, a Belgian passport holder of Tibetan origin arrested in the gold smuggling case, obtained citizenship as Nima Tamang from the District Administration Office, Kavrepalanchok.

According to the Ministry of Home Affairs, he was granted citizenship by descent as the son of Pema Tamang from Namobuddha Municipality-11 in Kavre.

The home ministry had formed a five-member team to investigate Chhiring’s citizenship certificate after he was arrested for investigation into the gold smuggling case. After nearly two weeks of investigation, the committee concluded that Chhiring had acquired a citizenship certificate under the name Nima Tamang. “Based on Chhiring’s biometrics collected by the Department of Immigration as well as the Central Investigation Bureau (CIB), the committee concludes that he obtained a citizenship certificate as Nima Lama.'”

According to the committee, Chhiring obtained the citizenship certificate in 2017.

Chhiring was arrested by the Department of Revenue Investigation on July 29 during a raid at the Thamel-based Hotel Vienna.

The CIB is continuing its investigation into the case.
