KATHMANDU: International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples was observed on Wednesday by organizing a variety of programs.
Speaking at a program on Wednesday, Deputy Speaker Indira Rana emphasized the need for more effective implementation of constitutional reservations aimed at benefiting indigenous people, women, and marginalized groups. She said that although the constitution has safeguarded the rights of these communities, the full realization of these rights remains incomplete. She also called for a collective and responsible effort from all stakeholders to uphold constitutionally-guaranteed rights.
Similarly, Minister for Law, Justice, and Parliamentary Affairs Dhanraj Gurung acknowledged the government’s commitment to safeguarding the rights of indigenous people. He said that the government is actively working on formulating necessary policies and laws to uphold these rights. “The government will bring an action plan to uphold these rights in the near future,” he added.
Also speaking on the occasion, Minister for Federal Affairs and General Administration, Aman Lal Modi, reflected on the struggle undertaken to secure the rights of indigenous nationalities as enshrined in the constitution.
