Saud calls on NAM to advocate for climate justice

KATHMANDU: Minister for Foreign Affairs, Narayan Prakash Saud, has emphasized the significance of the longstanding principles of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) and called upon global leaders to collectively promote dialogue, understanding, and peaceful resolutions to conflicts.

Addressing the Ministerial Meeting of the Non-Aligned Movement Coordinating Bureau (NAM-COB) held in Baku, Azerbaijan, on Thursday, Saud shed light on current global challenges and stressed the need to promote enduring peace through dialogue and respect for diversity. “Nepal firmly believes in the principles of NAM and the power of unity in confronting these challenges,” he added.

Saud also highlighted the need to accelerate economic development to achieve the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and strive for a just, inclusive, and equitable world order. He emphasized the importance of ensuring prosperity for all, leaving no one behind. He further emphasized NAM’s role in advocating for the reform of international financial institutions to make them more inclusive, transparent, and effective.

While discussing Nepal’s aspiration to graduate from least-developed country status by 2026, Saud also emphasized the adverse impacts of climate change in Nepal. He stressed the need for NAM to collectively advocate for climate justice, promote sustainable development, and mobilize support for climate adaptation and mitigation efforts.

On the sidelines of the event, Saud held bilateral meetings with Dr Zambry Abd Kadir, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Malaysia; Yuvan Gil-Pinto, Minister of People’s Power for Foreign Affairs of Venezuela; Mesganu Arga Moach, State Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ethiopia; and Do Hung Viet, Vice Minister for Foreign Affairs of Vietnam.
