Govt requests President to authenticate citizenship bill

KATHMANDU: The government has decided to request President Ram Chandra Poudel to authenticate the Nepal Citizenship Act (Amendment) Bill refused twice by former President Bidhya Devi Bhandar.

A cabinet meeting held on Friday took a decision to this extent.

The Federal Parliament Secretariat had sent the bill for authentication to former President Bidhya Devi Bhandari in September last year. But Bhandari refused to authenticate the Bill endorsed by both houses of parliament.

President Ram Chandra Poudel, who succeeded Bhandari in March, earlier held consultations with legal and constitutional experts on whether he can authenticate the Bill stopped by his predecessor.
