KATHMANDU: Nepali Congress has decided to field Govinda Bhattarai for the re-election in Tanahun-1 constituency.
The central work performance committee meeting of the party held in Lalitpur on Thursday took the decision.
The Tanahun-1 seat is lying vacant with the election of Ram Chandra Poduel to the post of President.
Similarly, NC has decided to make Jit Naraya Shrestha its candidate in the vacant Chitwan-2 constituency. Shrestha is the president of the party’s district committee. The constituency is lying vacant after the Supreme Court ruled Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) Rabi Lamichhane ineligible to hold public positions due to lack of citizenship certificate.
Lamichhane is expected to contest the election again.
NC, however, has not named any candidate in the Bara-2 seat, indicating that it would support the common candidate of the coalition.
Janata Samajbadi Party (JSP) Chairman Upendra Yadav is expected to contest in Bara-2. Another coalition partner, Janamat Party, however, is preparing to contest the election. Maoist leader Shiva Chandra Kushbaha, who was defeated in Bara-2 in the November election, joined Janamat Party the other day to contest the election in Bara-2.
The Bara-2 seat has become vacant after JSP lawmaker Ramsahaya Prasad Yadav was elected to the position of Vice President.
The Election Commission is holding by-polls in three constituencies on April 23.
