How can a person claiming responsibility for 5,000 deaths lead the country, question petitioners

KATHMANDU: Conflict victims, who filed writ petitions against Prime Minister and CPN (Maoist Center) Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal on Tuesday, have questioned how a person claiming responsibility for 5,000 insurgency-era deaths can lead the country.

After filing the writ petition, Kalyan Budhathoki, one of the petitioners, told the media that a total of 26 people had registered two petitions against Dahal, seeking justice for conflict-era incidents that were against the law.

Another petitioner, Shiva Kumar Budhatholi, said 17 people who lost their family members and eight others who suffered the loss of property due to insurgency-era incidents had filed the petition. “Since Prime Minister Dahal has claimed responsibility for killing 5,000 people, we have filed this petition to hold the perpetrator accountable,” he added.

Budhathoki also said that the Maoists had not returned assets seized from him during the insurgency. “Some of our friends’ family members are among those 5,000 people. Shouldn’t Dahal be brought to book for claiming responsibility for 5,000 insurgency-era deaths?” he questioned.

The Supreme Court is scheduled to hear the case on Wednesday, and the apex court has ordered Prime Minister Dahal to attend the hearing.
