KATHMANDU: Patan High Court Thursday ordered the police to release rape-accused cricketer Sandeep Lamichhane on bail.
A division bench of Judges Dhruba Raj Nanda and Ramesh Dhakal took the decision.
The high court has ordered Lamichhane to furnish a bail bond of Rs 2 million. He, however, won’t be able to leave the country until a final verdict is passed, Thagindra Kattel, the registrar of Patan High Court told Himal Press.
The former national team captain has been accused of raping a minor girl at a Kathmandu hotel. She has alleged that she was raped twice by Lamichhane.
Kathmandu District Court had sent Lamichhane to judicial custody on November 4 until a final decision is passed. Challenging the decision, Lamichhane had approached the Patan High Court.
Lamichhane’s attorneys had argued in the hearing that victim is not a minor as has been claimed. Following this, the high court had ordered prosecutors to bring birth registration details of the minor girl.
