KATHMANDU: A total of 71 Nepali nurses have been shortlisted for interviews for employment in the United Kingdom.
Although Nepal and the UK had agreed to select 100 nurses as a pilot program, only 71 applicants who met the selection criteria have been shortlisted, according to the Ministry of Labor, Employment, and Social Security.
The shortlisted candidates are required to undergo interviews for the final selection. The interviews will be conducted by representatives from the Ministry of Labor, the Department of Foreign Employment, and the UK’s Department of Health and Social Care at the British Council in Kathmandu on December 4-7.
The selected nurses will initially work for three months as assistant health caregivers (Band 4) in the UK, with a monthly salary of £2,299. After completing three months, they will be required to take an examination for registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Council. After passing the examination, they will be enrolled as Band 5 workers, receiving a monthly salary of £2,367, according to Dambar Bahadur Sunuwar, the undersecretary at the labor ministry.
The selection process for the second lot will be determined based on the success and outcomes of the pilot project, according to the ministry.
