KATHMANDU: Madhesh Chief Minister Saroj Kumar Yadav has been relieved of his position after failing to secure a vote of confidence in the Madhesh Province Assembly.

In the voting held on Wednesday, 53 assembly members out of 103 present voted against the motion of confidence tabled by Yadav. Fifty assembly members voted in favor of the proposal.

Yadav needed at least 54 votes to pass the floor test in the 107-member province assembly. One assembly member, Abhiram Sharma of Loktantrik Samajbadi Party (LSP), remains suspended after being convicted of murder by the court.

Assembly members of Nepali Congress, Janata Samajbadi Party, Nepal (JSP Nepal), and Rastriya Prajatantra Party (RPP) voted in favor of Yadav, while those of CPN-UML, Janamat Party, CPN (Maoist Center), CPN (Unified Socialist), Nepal Sanghiya Samajbadi Forum, and Nagarik Unmukti Party voted against the motion.

Parties that voted against Chief Minister Yadav have already reached an understanding to form a government in Madhesh Province under the Janamat Party.
