KATHMANDU:  Nepal is celebrating the 17th Republic Day on Tuesday. The national day is being celebrated to commemorate the establishment of the republic, which is intertwined with the struggles, sacrifices, and transformations of the Nepali people.

On April 24, 2006, then King Gyanendra Shah relinquished his direct rule and reinstated the parliament, paving the way for the transition to a republic. This historic decision was driven by the armed struggle waged by the then CPN (Maoist) and the peaceful movement led by seven parliamentary political parties.

Subsequently, the first meeting of the Constituent Assembly declared the establishment of a republic on May 28, 2008. This historic day is celebrated every year as the Republic Day.

Various programs are being organized across the country to commemorate the day. The main celebration is taking place at the Tundikhel parade ground in Kathmandu, organized by the Republic Day Main Celebration Committee. President Ram Chandra Poudel will grace the event.

To mark the occasion, the President, Prime Minister, and other high-ranking officials have extended their best wishes to the people.

President Ram Chandra Poudel has stated that the federal democratic republican system has ensured complete political rights to all Nepali people. He emphasized that the primary objective of the republic is to uplift the living standards of the people, which requires increasing production, ensuring equitable distribution, promoting employment, and maintaining good governance.

Similarly, Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal said that the republic is not just a political system but also a governing model and a way of life.
