17 dead, 28 injured as bus veers off Prithvi Highway in Dhading

KATHMANDU: As many as 17 died and 28 others were injured in a bus accident on the Prithvi Highway in Dhading on early Monday morning.

According to police, the passenger bus (registration number Ga 1 Kha 1421), which was traveling from Pokhara to Kathmandu, veered of the highway and fell onto the bank of the Trishuli River at Bhainsegauda in Ward-5 of Benighat Rorang Rural Municipality, at around 1:30 am.

A rescue team from the Disaster Management Base in Adamghat of the Armed Police Force Nepal was deployed to the site immediately after receiving information about the accident, said Armed Police Force Nepal Spokesperson DIG Bishnu Prasad Bhatta.

The bodies are still at the accident site, while the injured have been rushed to different health facilities for treatment.

A total of 45 passengers were on board the ill-fated bused operated by Machhapuchhre Travels. Of them, 43 had boarded from Pokhara and two from Muglin.

The identities of the deceased and injured have yet to be confirmed. The cause of the accident has not been determined, police say.
