KATHMANDU: A total of 126 Nepali students studying at the Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology (KIIT) in Odisha, India, have returned to Nepal.
Officiating Chief District Officer of Parsa, Nishan Raj Gautam, informed the RSS news agency that 123 male and three female students entered Nepal via the Raxaul border on Wednesday.
“The returning students have accused the KIIT administration of issuing threats and subjecting them to mental harassment,” Gautam said.
The KIIT administration had ordered more than 500 Nepali students to immediately vacate the university campus and hostel on Monday after they demanded a fair investigation into the death of fellow Nepali student Prakriti Lamsal.
Lamsal was found dead in her hostel room on Sunday evening.
Videos posted on social media showed security guards assaulting Nepali students and university staff making racist remarks toward them.
Following widespread criticism for its handling of the case, KIIT issued an apology and requested students to return to the hostel.
The Odisha government has formed a three-member high-level team to investigate the incident.
