LALITPUR: Altogether 1,063 Mahasamiti members of the Nepali Congress (NC) signed a proposal for ‘Vedic Sanatan Hindu State along with Religious Freedom’ initiated by central committee member Shankar Bhandari.

Bhandari, the coordinator of Sanatan Hindu State Nepal Mega Campaign, submitted the proposal to NC President Sher Bahadur Deuba after briefing the Mahasamiti meeting about the need and relevance of the agenda.

Although the present constitution states that Nepali will be a secular state with religious freedoms, some leaders of the Nepali Congress are openly advocating for a Hindu state. Most of the Mahasamiti members representing Madhes and Sudurpaschim province have supported Bhandari’s proposal.

Co-convenor of the campaign, Lokesh Dhakal, said that they were not fueling religious conflict but only giving a platform to people’s opinions through the mega campaign. “Vedic Sanatan Hindu religion is common ideals of all,” Dhakal argued.
