10 JSP Nepal leaders arrested in Kathmandu

KATHMANDU: As many as 10 leaders and cadres of Janata Samajbadi Party (JSP) Nepal, including three lawmakers, were arrested on Tuesday while staging a torch rally in Kathmandu.

They were protesting the mandamus of the Supreme Court to the Rautahat administration to probe the 2007 Gaur killings.

According to JSP Nepal General Secretary Ram Kumar Sharma, federal lawmaker and JSP Spokesperson Manish Suman, Madhes Province Assembly member Kiran Sah and Lumbini Province Assembly member Ambika Kafle have been arrested.

The apex court issued the order in response to a petition demanding investigation and legal action in connection with the Gaur killings, in which JSP Nepal Chairperson Upendra Yadav has also been named.

As many as 27 Maoist cadres were brutally massacred in Gaur of Rautahat when clashes ensued between the CPN (Maoist) and Madheshi People’s Rights Forum (MPRF), led by Yadav, in March 2007. The incident occurred as both sides insisted on holding their mass meetings at the same venue —the Rice Mill grounds in Gaur.
