National ID made mandatory for real estate transactions from Jan 14

KATHMANDU: The government has made the National ID card mandatory for real estate transactions.

Issuing a notice in the Nepal Gazette, the Ministry of Home Affairs said the National ID will be required for buying and selling of property from January 14 next year.

Currently, property transactions are processed using citizenship certificates of buyers and sellers. “However, from January 14, the National ID card will be mandatory for real estate transactions as part of the government’s plan to implement its use across all sectors,” said Joint Secretary Narayan Prasad Bhattarai, who is also the spokesperson for the home ministry.

“The Ministry has published a notice in the Gazette including the government’s decisions regarding the use of National ID cards mentioned in Sections 3 and 10 of the National Identity Card and Registration Act, 2019. Now, the National ID card will be mandatory for real estate transactions as well,” he added.

Bhattarai also said that the National ID card will be required to access various services in different districts, including social security, health insurance, pensions, revenue (personal income tax registration), driver’s licenses, and company registration and renewal, among others, from mid-July.

The National ID will also be mandatory for obtaining SIM cards from January 14, according to Bhattarai.

The notice issued by the home ministry in the Gazette states that the National ID number must now be presented instead of citizenship certificates to access public services provided by government agencies, institutions and the private sector.
